During lunch breaks at the hospital, a group of colleagues played table tennis with passion. Score disputes, forgotten serve turns, and no way to settle a ranking — it was chaos that demanded a solution.

Alex Benny, an Anesthesia Lecturer with no formal coding background, sat down, thought through the problem logically, and built TT Buddy — a full-stack, real-time web app with cloud sync, ranking algorithms, and tournament management.

The OPI Engine

A ranking system that's actually fair.

The Overall Performance Index (OPI) isn't just win/loss. It rewards consistent play, penalises low match volume, and accounts for match closeness — calculated separately per sport and displayed as a 0–100% score relative to your arena's top player.

10-Match Provisional Period

Players with fewer than 10 matches receive a proportional activity penalty. This prevents lucky early wins from dominating the leaderboard. Provisional ratings are clearly labelled in the arena rankings.

Performance Index (PI) — Winners

10 PI is distributed each match based on score ratio. A dominant 11-2 win earns more PI than a scrappy 11-9. Winner always earns the majority share.

Loser PI Tiers (Score Ratio)

Losers earn tiered PI based on how competitive they were: Score ratio ≥80% → +2 PI, ≥50% → +1 PI, ≥40% → −1 PI, else −2 PI. Fight hard even in a loss.

Tournament Trophy Bonus

Winning a tournament awards +25 OPI rating points (up from 10) and a permanent sport-specific trophy on your player card. Trophies are tracked independently per sport.

Walkover (W/O) Penalty

Walkovers award the winner +5.0 PI and deduct −5.0 from the forfeiting player. Fair, swift, and accountable.
